If you have some time -- maybe while hanging lights or baking the next few days-- you could do worse than listening to Mark Steyn's 2-part podcast on songwriter Hugh Martin, particularly the interesting tale behind the tale of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
It's a delightful profile of Martin, who passed away at the age of 96 early last year, complete with his own commentary, and it's fun Hollywood/Broadway history. In the story of the evolution of the lyrics of the song, it's a neat little human interest story.
To whet your whistle, I'll just hint that Martin was once a self-described Christmas hater....and also that in the closing years of his life he was the pianist for his little Church community, and he talks about that. A talented man, a modest man, and a lovely one.

Part two.
