Jokes aside, there are two interesting items in this story of a forced marriage arranged by the head of some break-away Mormon group.
The mainstream Mormon church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, renounced polygamy more than a century ago and excommunicates members who engage in the practice. It disavows any connection with the fundamentalist church.Wouldn't it have been refreshing to see such a straightforward presentation of Catholic teaching in the recent stories about women's ordination --instead of all the credulous headlines about the "first women Roman Catholic priests" being ordained, or the stories crafted to make orthodoxy seem oppressive? Why do you suppose religion reporters manage to get a handle on the doctrine of the Mormon church, but not the Catholic? Which Church has more members and has been around longer?
On another note --wonder of wonders!-- a victim turns down additional money:
As a victim in the case, Miss Wall had the right to receive $5,000 from Jeffs as restitution, but she declined yesterday. Prior to the trial, she had received more than $16,000 from a separate state fund.Well!
"My restitution is knowing that I spoke the truth and that you and the justice system have done your job," she told state Judge James Shumate.
