So. I was working a conference this past weekend. About 75 folks more or less like me, who share my same apostolic interests, receiving formation in spiritual theology and ethics. The evaluation forms were gushing for the most part with respect to content. The Canadian participants, however, to a person, were truly scandalized that the center where we met used paper napkins and coffee cups at meal times. Every single one of them cited B16's concern for the environment and gave a long lecture on the obligation to recycle. I emphasize that these were sensible folk, not rabid "greens."
I was mentioning this to one of our chaplains, and he said that when he was stationed in Germany he learned that there, if you don't publish your promotional materials on the cheapest, most-numerous-times-recycled paper, people make a moral judgment about you and can't get past it enough to hear anything else you say.
I'm not sure I have a point, I just note it.
