Fourteen Catholic members of Congress have penned
a letter calling for the U.S. Bishops to take action to end the war in Iraq.
We write today to urge you to help mobilize Catholic opinion on this, one of the most critical issues of our time. To that end, we respectfully request a meeting with representatives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to discuss ways in which we can work together in pursuit of our shared goal of ending the war in Iraq as soon as possible.

We have taken great comfort in the prophetic words of many Catholic leaders, relied on them for inspiration during our deliberations, and welcomed them in helping shape policy.
In spite of their opposition to going to war with Iraq in the first place, I'm not certain the bishops are going to be in favor of a precipitous pull-out, being less interested in the political hegemony of the Democratic party than in the lives and souls at stake. If you think the USCCB is going to smile blithely at genocide, you truly don't understand the first thing about Catholicism (
here's the latest USCCB statement on Iraq). But nevermind. Let's keep these remarks about welcoming help in shaping policy on file for the next abortion, stem-cell, euthanasia or marriage debate, shall we? Curtsy to
