Update: Well, five hours of Wagner (I'm not a fan) was enough to tax the limits of my crush on Placido Domingo (especially since he dies 3 hours in), but Mr. W. was rapt, and that's all that counts.
The director thinks this is an "American" ring just because the superscript translated "War-Father" as "Commander-in-Chief," Wotan wore a business suit, and the Valkyrie parachuted from WWII bombers instead of riding the clouds on horseback in the famous 3rd act opening. Dunno, didn't open up new worlds of meaning for me.
