Here is one of two pieces (the other being a letter to the editor) in today's WaTi attacking VA Dem Senate Candidate Jim Webb for being against women in combat. Um, excuse me, but isn't that the conservative position? He's being widely attacked for having written an article entitled "Women Can't Fight," but for heaven's sake, they can't! I'm not talking about keeping people out of non-combat positions, and I saw an article a couple of days ago about a female pilot who received some flying medal --and she deserved it. But when you saw petite lil Jessica Lynch on tv (no disrespect to her intended), describing her experiences as an Iraqi POW in her high, mousy voice, did you feel a thrill of pride in our military prowess? Think the enemies were intimidated? Did you feel safe?
Talk to any infantryman --not a C.O. living out the military's infernal CYA culture-- about the real life experiences of women in the military. The lower standards. The excuses. (In the case of the 82nd Airborne, says Lil Bro, the broken ankles after jumps.) No offense; we're just physically weaker. Period.
To say nothing of the immorality of sending Mom to war; I question whether a person who supports Moms in combat can have any deep sense of what "family" is.
This piece slams Webb for opposing the Vietnam Women's Memorial --as if he'd been maliciously trying to prevent women who'd served nobly from getting their due-- rather than the truth that he was opposing a general push towards women in combat, and saw the memorial as a cultural contribution to that push. The real rap on Webb on this issue is that, as on everything else he used to believe, he no longer believes it. Alas, this is an area where even Conservatives seem to have capitulated utterly. Except for Elaine Donnelly, of course, who's on the case of the Pentagon putting women in combat via semantic sleight of hand --even though it's against the law.
Strange that the one place where the Bush Administration actually is abusing the law the Left and the MSM have nothing to say and no interest in investigating.
