Just 'Cause It's Christian Don't Make It Good

Long-time readers know my ongoing gripe with Christians who are so grateful for a "clean" movie they don't care if it's schlock. It's in that vein that Steven Greydanus is not enthralled by the forthcoming One Night With the King. He’s effectively scared me off.

I am, however, eagerly awaiting the release of Bella. It’s an indie starring “the Mexican Brad Pitt,” Eduardo Verástegui, who came to Hollywood to make his fortune, converted to Catholicism, and then did this flick on a shoestring, which by some miracle got accepted to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, winning the People’s Choice award. And I know this because two friends of mine worked on the set (the movie’s set in NY, but was filmed in Philly).

Meanwhile, in small-screen news, Aaron Sorkin is either waging a TV war against Christians or giving them their first realistic prime-time embodiment.
Sorkin's not just spinning fictional storylines. He based Harriet on the experiences of his friend Kristin Chenoweth , the Tony Award-winning actress and devout Christian who co-starred on his earlier series, "The West Wing," as a Democratic press secretary. He says he practically swiped one of Harriet's early lines from his conversations with Chenoweth: "In other parts of the world that aren't New York or L.A., the fact that I believe in God isn't noteworthy."

Well, good for her in any case. Now: just to save myself a post, here's as good a place as any for a free speech case I'd love to see the ACLU take on: A Texas (Protestant) seminary has banned speaking in tongues.

Heh. Sorkin's faux comedy troupe should do a skit about that.
