By some counts, up to 5 percent of the U.S. population is now "undocumented." Why? Partly because American business is so overregulated there is a compelling economic logic to employing illegals. In essence, a chunk of the American economy has seceded from the Union.See? And as long as that's allowed to continue, people will still prefer to come here illegally rather than legally.
Could we assimilate many more legal immigrants as I've been advocating? Financially, yes. Doesn't address the citizenship thing, though.
