Local Liberty posted this powerful eyewitness account (with photos, video, & transcripts) of the scene outside San Quentin at the vigil for Tookie Williams' execution. My take on the death penalty (which I hope is an accurate expression of the Catholic one) you'll find here and here. What's interesting about these photos is that neither camp has any interest in the fate of Tookie Williams. They use him for their various causes, and in fact the two sides are mirror images of each other: equally motivated by power considerations, assertions of will, and nothing more. For the record, the John Paul II position is that it is never moral to use a person as an object. Would that we had an articulate spokesman for the culture of life in these cases.
