Not To Kill Your Excuse For Eating Sweet Potato Pie Or Anything

I'm interested in how long Kwanzaa will survive. According to Joseph Pieper in In Tune With the World, a successful festival requires a festive occasion; you can't build a real celebration around an abstract principle --not even seven of them. That's why there's no Democracy Day, but there is Independence Day. If Pieper is right, you shouldn't be able to abruptly declare a celebration that's mainly aimed at "de-Whiting" Christmas and have it last. Yet judging simply by what's on offer at the stores, there seems to be a genuine Kwanzaa market which, after exploding onto the scene a few years ago, has not dissipated even if it hasn't grown. Which makes me wonder if Kwanzaa will evolve or has evolved into something genuine or if it's dying. This guest post from Hugh Hewitt's blog has some interesting reporting on Kwanzaa.
