I still maintain the reason Reid and Schumer were pleased with the Miers nomination is not because she would have been bad, but because they were grateful to the Prez. for the stealth nomination --because they, far more than the President-- wish to duck a big battle over the Judiciary. The Dems have mid-term elections to win just like everyone else, and their prospects for a big Congressional turnover rest on appealing to Moderates and Republicans who are tired of Bush. It does not help the Dems to remind everyone how extreme they are; on the other hand, the Michael Moorons have taken over the Democratic base, and if you check out the Lefty blogs, you will see how unhinged they are over the Alito nomination and the fact that Karl Rove still has his job. When they say, "Jump," Mr. Reid is forced to ask, "How high?" And hence: desperate stunts.
