When I was posted in Rome for volunteer work, I had a somewhat prissy Mexican colleague who used to sniff at people who "hacen barbaridades" (commit barbarities) such as going barefoot or letting their kids play in cold weather. Privately I felt somewhat superior for knowing that colds are caused by viruses, and felt sorry for people who come from 2nd World countries with inferior medical knowledge. Ha.
