Anyone ever see the Star Trek (original) episode in which some higher power compels The Enterprise and a rival ship to settle their differences though the battle of representative champions? All I recall is Captain Kirk battling some lizard dude while the crew of the Enterprise watched helplessly. At one point, Kirk catches on that he can make gun powder, and Spock says, slowly and knowingly, in one of the most preposterous moments of television, "He knows. He knows. He has reasoned it out." (Spock was so proud of Kirk at that moment, though no one knew what he was talking about).
Which is all too lengthy an introduction to this Peter Schramm post at No Left Turns, but what can I say --it's what sprang to mind.
