Chicken Or The Egg?

In WaTi today: 70% of Americans say rudeness is a big problem in our society, and 93% of them blame parents who either don't have time or simply refuse to teach their kids manners. (I'd seriously like to question one of the 4% of Americans who think manners have improved in the past 25 years). And Thomas Sowell laments "spoiled brat politics," in which citizens believe their desires should be met and paid for by anyone but themselves. Which came first, do you suppose? Did a generalized feeling of entitlement lead to the demise of basic concern for others? Or vice versa?
