Fascinating article on opiate use in Iran, where some say up to 20% of the population is addicted to heroin. When you read about the opiate fields of Afghanistan, it always seems as if narcotics are something pious Muslims export to the decadent West but eschew for themselves. But young people, oppressed in practically every way in Iran, increasingly despair and turn to heroin --which is cheaper than beer there.
