The Pope's going to visit a synagogue during World Youth Day. (It just occurred to me that if the Vatican really wants to cement ties with the Jews, the Pope should learn some Yiddish, maybe develop a taste for lox. If B16 were ever to call relativists meshuggenah, I have the feeling all residual bad feelings would melt away and the Pope would become an overnight mensch.
Just to show the Vatican how serious they are about opening ties, China arrested a bishop. (If this weren't so serious, wouldn't it be funny? Why do totalitarian regimes have such tin ears --arresting people at precisely the time their diplomats are trying to make nice?)
